VALUE MATCHING

Make 3 Color aid samples, each having a gray of a distincly different value. Make sure the gray is in the middle position of each square and the two chosen hues precisely match the gray value. The two hues may be different in each sample.

VALUE SCALE

Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a colour - in this case, a grey. This scale will be created in achromatic steps. Achromatic means the absence of colour - only using mixtures of black and white.

Complement Scale

To make a 5 step scale in paint which moves in even steps from one complement to another through a neutral middle mixture.

Five Value Still Life

To create a 5-Step Scale assigning a pure warm color for light and a pure complementary cool color for the shadow. To complete a painting with a convincing sense of volume, light and shadow of still-life objects that will appear to be bathed in light.

1. Draw a refined view of objects with distinct shadows and light.
2. Create a diagram by tracing the drawing, isolating five values and numbering them (light #1 > darkest shadow #5).
3. Develop a pencil value scale matching the drawing from lightest to darkest.
4. Choose two complementary colours for light (warm) and shadow (cool), with one complement formed by mixing two primary colours.
5. Ensure the finished painting maintains the same value relationship as the original drawing.
6. Paint while aiming for a match between all paint values and the pencil values in the original drawing.
