Why are coasters always so BORING?

With thoughtful design, coasters could enhance the table setting, spark conversation, or even serve a secondary purpose beyond just being a boring buffer. It’s time to rethink what a coaster can be!

Idea generation

While using a coaster, I noticed its limitations—there was no designated space for a spoon, stir stick, or used tea bag. This insight sparked the idea of a double-layer coaster, designed to provide a convenient, organized solution for these small essentials while keeping the surface tidy.

The coaster industry includes a range of products designed for protecting surfaces from heat and condensation. Recent years have seen innovation in materials, functionality, and design, driven by consumer interest in aesthetic appeal, sustainability, and multi-functionality.

💡 Key Insight: 

The ideal product balances practicality, price, and uniqueness. Overpriced designs with weak differentiation struggle, while truly innovative or affordable problem-solving products perform well.

The coaster market is highly competitive at lower price points but presents strong opportunities for innovation and differentiation. Successful crowdfunding campaigns focus on clear problem-solving, engaging storytelling, and strategic pricing.

Develop Process

I cut cork and then used screws to combine it to make the prototype 1, then I use 3D printing to make prototype 2.

I conducted spontaneous user testing with Prototype 1 engaging over 20 individuals. Participants were asked to guess the product’s function, interact with it, and suggest a price based on their experience.

I then updated the design to Prototype 3, replacing the connection and rotation mechanism with a Ball Bearing for improved stability and smoother movement. 

After conducting a focus group test, I further refined the design to Prototype 4, incorporating a mechanical feature to enhance the stability of the closed position.

This stage I am focusing on exploring different making technologies and materials to balance the coast of good and price per iuniy.
